FINAL Verified and Delist Lists of Impaired Waters for the Group 1 Basins

The Department announces the availability of the FINAL lists of impaired waters for the Group 1 Basins: Everglades West Coast, Lake Okeechobee, Ocklawaha, Ochlockonee - St. Marks, Suwannee, and Tampa Bay.

These FINAL lists were produced with water quality and biological data included in IWR Database Run 56 and reflect several major milestones to the assessment of Florida’s waterbodies.  In particular, the FINAL lists include the revised dissolved oxygen criterion assessed as percent saturation (replacing the assessment of dissolved oxygen as mg/L) and the implementation of numeric nutrient criteria for streams, lakes, springs, and estuaries. These final lists were adoped by Secretarial Order signed by DEP Secretary Valenstein on October 2, 2019.  In addition to the final assessment lists, the department posted the Master Lists (which contains all assessments for all waterbodies in each basin) available here. 

Waterbodies and water segments identified on the FINAL Verified List have been determined to not meet water quality standards and are being added to the State’s Verified List of Impaired Waters and will be submitted to EPA as updates to the federal 303(d) list. Waterbodies and water segments identified on the FINAL Delist Lists include those waters that are proposed for removal from the State’s Verified List and federal 303(d) list for several reasons: the waterbody is no longer impaired, a TMDL has been completed, the parameter verified impaired in the previous assessment was due to a flaw in the original analysis, or changes have been made to the waterbody type or class.  

Waterbodies identified on the FINAL Verified List will be prioritized and scheduled for TMDL development. A TMDL represents the maximum amount of pollutant loading that can be discharged to a waterbody and have its designated uses be met. The final step in this process will be the development, by watershed stakeholders and department of a restoration plan that specifies the activities, schedule, and funding sources that point and nonpoint source dischargers will undertake to restore the waterbody.
