The Water Quality Protection Program (WQPP) Action Plan (Item W.10) of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary identifies impaired water quality in residential canals as a priority for corrective action. Many of the residential canals in the Keys do not meet the state's water quality standards and are a source of nutrients and other pollutants to near shore waters. Water quality problems in residential canals include land-based discharges of inadequately treated wastewater and stormwater, poor tidal circulation or flushing and accumulation of organic debris, such as dead seaweed and flot
The Village of Islamorada Central Sewer System will serve Village of Islamorada residents and businesses on Lower Matecumbe, Upper Matecumbe, Windley Key and Plantation Key. The collection system is owned by the Village of Islamorada with the design, construction and operation managed by Layne Christensen, known locally as Reynolds Water Islamorada. The collection system is a combination of vacuum and low pressure with sewage conveyed to the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment Facility ("Facility"). The Facility is located in Key Largo.
The Cudjoe Regional Wastewater Service Area (CRWSA) will serve Monroe County residents and businesses on Lower Sugarloaf Key, Upper Sugarloaf Key, Cudjoe Key, Summerland Key, Ramrod Key, Little Torch Key and Big Pine Key. The collection system and facility are owned by Monroe County with the design, construction and operation managed by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority. The collection system is a combination of gravity and low pressure with sewage conveyed to the Cudjoe Regional Advanced Water Reclamation Facility.
