Staff in the Office of Legislative Affairs coordinate DEP’s legislative agenda and assist in developing legislative policy on behalf of the department. Legislative Affairs serves as the point of contact for legislators and their staffs who need information about DEP programs.
Legislative Affairs prepares bill analyses, proposals and recommendations to inform the members of Florida House of Representatives, the Florida Senate, Governor's Office and others about the department's position on legislative issues. The proposals and analyses help policymakers and the public understand the legislation and its effects.
DEP maintains an interest in a wide range of issues as changes in law may affect DEP’s programs and procedures. Staff track legislation related to the environment, legal procedure, information systems, administrative functions, human resources and the budget.

DEP provides guidance to Florida’s congress, the Governor’s Office, federal agencies and national associations on federal legislative proposals that include amendments or reauthorizations of environmental laws, requests for appropriations, and implementation suggestions or constituent inquiries.
Annually, DEP prepares a public works request for funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for Florida projects. Staff track federal agency budgets that affect DEP, the water management districts or local environmental projects. DEP staff also support land purchase appropriations for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife refuges, the National Park Service and the Forest Service, and pursue opportunities to increase federal funding for ongoing or special activities in Florida.
DEP staff provide briefings and background material to congressional and federal agency staff. Occasionally, staff will be asked to provide witnesses for hearings.
