Hurricane Michael Post-Storm Beach Conditions and Coastal Impact Report

Hurricane Michael made landfall on October 10, 2018, in Northwest Florida near Tyndall Air Force Base. At landfall, Michael was a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale. Hurricane Michael substantially impacted the coast from Panama City Beach to St. Marks. This report documents the impact of Hurricane Michael on the beaches, dunes, and coastal construction. It will assist the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (Department) and local governments to identify areas where storm erosion has left upland development and infrastructure vulnerable to imminent damage from future storms, where beaches and dunes may be restored, and where expedited permitting procedures are needed to assist homeowners with repairs and reconstruction.

The Department developed this Post-Storm Beach Conditions and Damage Assessment Report to quantify the damages caused by Hurricane Michael. This report provides an assessment of storm impact, beach and dune erosion, and structural damages to the coast of northwest Florida. Although extensive structural damage occurred well inland of the coast, the damage assessment in this report specifically focuses on damage within the coastal building zone, as defined in Chapter 161, Florida Statutes.
