Clean Boater Program

Established in 2001, the Clean Boater Program is a derivative of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Clean Vessel Act pumpout grant program. It seeks to involve boaters in protecting Florida’s waterways through education on the importance of protecting the state’s native vegetation, wildlife and natural environment. In collaboration with the Clean Marina Program, the program provides guidance on adopting environmentally friendly practices including proper trash management, using bilge socks and fueling collars, EPA Safer Choice products, and practicing good recycling habits.

By adopting pollution prevention measures, Florida Clean Boaters can take satisfaction in knowing they are doing their part in keeping Florida’s waterways clean and preserving them for the future.

The Clean Boater Habits booklet provides information on how to properly inspect equipment, cleaning techniques for boats and trailers, and educational materials on invasive species. Visit the Clean Boater FAQ for frequently asked questions on best practices for a Clean Boater. Florida boaters are encouraged to take the Clean Boater Pledge and educate other mariners on the importance of protecting the environment. All Clean Boater Program pledgees receive a welcome package composed of program decals, CVA rack card and a complimentary gift.

In collaboration with this project, the Florida Clean Marina Program awards certification to marine facilities that have incorporated environmental responsibility into their management practices. The Clean Boater Program encourages its members to visit these facilities as an extension of their dedication to environmental responsibility. Many locations throughout the state of Florida also provide pumpouts for patron usage. The U.S. Coast Guard provides Vessel Safety Checks at zero cost to the public to ensure all watercrafts are in full compliance with federal and state boating laws. This information, as well as educational materials on invasive aquatic plant species and current tide charts, are linked below.
