Algal Bloom Response Team

The state's Algal Bloom Response Team includes several state agencies and local governments, working together to address algal blooms, each with specific roles.

Department of Environmental Protection

  • Conducts routine sampling and collects samples of observed algal blooms reported through the hotline or the website
  • Report a bloom online or call the toll-free hotline at 855-305-3903.

Florida Department of Health

  • Issues health advisories as it deems appropriate in regards to toxicity levels and posts warning signs along public beaches where blooms are present and human exposure is a concern. Typically, local county health departments direct these actions.
  • To report illnesses or symptoms, contact the Florida Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

  • Addresses fish kill reports and instances of animal endangerment/injury from the blooms
  • To report a fish kill, contact the Fish Kill Hotline at 800-636-0511.
  • To report any other wildlife injuries, call FWC’s Wildlife Alert at 1-888-404-3922
  • Assists in sampling nearshore marine water
