Regional Coastal Monitoring Data

About Regional Coastal Monitoring Data Files

(Links on this page will open in a new window.)

Topographic profiles are collected annually by Beaches Field Services in one quadrant of the state, except in beach nourishment areas that are monitored by project sponsors in accordance with permit requirements using private surveying firms. Offshore bathymetric surveys are no longer conducted by the department, but historical surveys are available through the links below, and new surveys are obtained from the project sponsors of beach and inlet management activities. Also, aerial photography and LiDAR are obtained from other sources.

Proposed Schedule for Topographic Surveys

The proposed schedule for topographic surveys is as follows:

  • FY 2017/2018 - Northeast

  • FY 2018/2019 - Southwest

  • FY 2019/2020 - Southeast

  • FY 2020/2021 - Northwest

Profile Survey Data

Beach and offshore profile data files collected by BFS surveyors or by private company land surveyors can be found in the Profile Data directory and visually in the Click-On Profiles directory. Each zipped file’s horizontal and vertical datum is noted in the header, and the profile data provided on this site has been reviewed for quality control by the division staff. Also, the distance from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) survey reference monument to the mean high water (MHW) position are extracted from the beach profile surveys and this data can be found In the MHW files directory. For more information about profile survey data and MHW files, please e-mail Libbie McDearmid or call 850-245-7539

Range Monument Tabulation

Each zipped file contains range monument locations, elevation and azimuth information used to reference beach profile surveys. The locations are used as reference marks and do not necessarily correspond to physical monuments found in the field. All location information is provided in NAD83/90 horizontal datum and NAVD1988 vertical datum. For more information about range monuments, please e-mail Tim Besse or call 850-245-7559.

More About Beaches Data

Many of the survey monuments have been moved over time as a result of changed site conditions such as erosion or building construction. This is clearly indicated in the control headings in the profile data files. The reviewed version of the beach profile data is provided at the link above. A standardized horizontal and vertical reference system is employed to maintain consistency and commonality of the data for analytical purposes. This data is usually the version that coastal engineers and scientists performing coastal analyses will use. It should be noted there may be profile data that is not yet available in the Historic Shoreline Data set due to time lags in the review process.

For more information, see our Beach Field Services Staff Contacts page.
