Broward County

Broward County, located in the middle of the South Florida metropolitan area, offers charming beaches along a metropolitan backdrop. A day along the coast can be spent sunbathing, scuba diving, fishing, fine dining, shopping or sightseeing at one of Broward County's many notable attractions. Broward's many miles of coastline offer numerous public accesses to the beach and various fishing piers throughout the county.

Broward's coastline is dotted with scuba diving sites and artificial reefs. Scuba diving is one of the many types of outdoor recreation commonly found along Broward's coast. Surfing is also a popular activity. Each beach offers a unique seaside venue. Walk down Hollywood's two-and-a-half mile boardwalk which was voted one of the top in the United States, or catch a boat charter in Pompano Beach for a fishing excursion. Regardless of which beach you choose, Broward County will offer entertainment and beautiful scenery.

Formed in 1915, the county was named after Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. Since its inception, Broward has offered visitors unique coastal experiences and a variety of notable attractions, such as the Swimming Hall of Fame, Butterfly World, Flamingo Gardens and Port Everglades. Visitors also can enjoy a day excursion in Everglades National Park while staying in Broward County. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park have ideal beach accesses and nature trails along the coast. Various outdoor events occur throughout the year such as gourmet farmers markets, free concerts, craft festivals, seafood festivals and marathons, just to name a few.

Many different types of sea turtles including green turtles, leatherbacks, hawksbills and loggerheads use this coastline for laying their eggs. Parallel to the coastline, the Intracoastal Waterway travels along the majority of the interior of the county.

Broward's 24 miles of sandy beaches have something to offer for every visitor. When visiting this county, you will never have a problem finding a way onto the beach.
