Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, founded in 1954, is owned and managed by the National Audubon Society. Now celebrating 70 years, its 13,400+ acres include the largest stand of old-growth, bald cypress forest in the world. Sanctuary Director Keith Laakkonen will discuss the wildlife that lives there, why the sanctuary is so important for Southwest Florida, how it was established, and work underway to protect and restore its habitats. He will also explain how visitors can discover the rugged beauty of this natural area on the Sanctuary's famous boardwalk—a 2.25-mile adventure through an enchanting wilderness, home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer, a wide variety of wading birds, and more.
