Completed events:

Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve Marine Debris Cleanup Event

Thank you to the Central Panhandle Aquatic Preserves (CPAP) staff, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)’s Eastern Panhandle Shorebird Biologists for collaborating to host a marine debris and aquaculture gear cleanup at Leonard’s Landing in Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve!

Approximately 6,500 pounds of litter and debris were collected by state employees, oyster aquaculture leaseholders and local volunteers within and around Alligator Harbor’s shoreline and coastal waters.

The event served to eliminate debris from vital shorebird nesting habitats in the aquatic preserve, such as the intertidal oyster bars utilized by American Oystercatchers, prior to the start of shorebird nesting season. Debris and aquaculture gear pose a threat of entanglement to wildlife and removing it from Alligator Harbor supports our agencies’ collective missions to protect and promote the health of our aquatic ecosystems.

Cedar Key Cover Net Cleanup Event

Thank you to the local community members, participants from the University of Florida and volunteers who joined the cleanup on Jan. 18-19, 2025!

Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve team members partnered with Ocean Aid 360 for a marine debris cleanup in Cedar Key, removing hundreds of pounds of hurricane debris — including netting, barrels, crab traps and more.

More than 10 volunteer airboaters, shallow draft vessels and volunteers joined to pick up derelict cover netting and fishing gear. Ocean Aid 360 has collected nearly half a million pounds of ocean plastics and derelict fishing gear since October 2018.
