Narrator: Each year, more than 60,000 jobs and over 6 billion dollars of our local economy depend on the health of our coral reefs in southeast Florida.

The vast and beautiful reefs off our shores, provide habitat for 30 percent of our fisheries, and protect our shorelines from erosion, storms and hurricanes.

However, pollution, coastal construction, maritime industry impacts, over-fishing and recreational misuse are harming our reefs.

Narrator: The Everglades is not the only natural treasure in South Florida.

The third longest coral reef in the world lies just offshore from our beaches.

These reefs are vast, beautiful, provide habitat for Florida's fisheries and also protect our shorelines.

However, they are also vulnerable and at risk due to pollution, over fishing and coastal construction.

Narrator: Coral Reefs are alive! They contain millions of tiny animals that form a spectacular and complex community. Reefs provide nurseries and a safe haven for hundreds of fish and other marine life. They are valuable natural resources that protect our coasts by reducing wave energy from storms and hurricanes.

Coral reefs in Florida are usually associated with the Florida Keys. However, extensive and beautiful coral reefs are also found off Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties, north of the Keys.
