Coral Creatures
Coral reefs are the rain forests of the sea because they support many diverse species. Butterfly fish are one of many species in the coral reef community. Butterfly fish are brightly colored with shades of black, white, blue, red, orange and yellow. Many have eyespots on their flanks and dark bands across their eyes like the patters seen on butterfly wings.
Learn more about Florida's Coral Reef.
Florida’s Coral Reef stretches almost 350 miles from the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico to the St. Lucie Inlet on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the only coral reef system in the continental United States. The reef is home to over forty species of reef-building corals that provide shelter, food and breeding sites for millions of plants and animals. Want to see the reef? You can watch Coral City Camera live from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve.
