FGS Near-Surface Geophysical Capabilities

Geophysics is the subsurface site characterization of the geology, geological structure, groundwater, contamination, and human artifacts beneath the Earth's surface, based on the lateral and vertical mapping of physical property variations that are remotely sensed using non-invasive technologies (EEGS, 2022). Near-surface geophysics employ noninvasive methods for collecting data about the shallow (tens of meters) subsurface.

Problem Soils

Most clay minerals are hygroscopic, meaning they have a tendency to absorb moisture. As the water table naturally fluctuates with local precipitation, the soil beneath a home or other building may shrink or swell depending on the amount of clay within it. If the soil contains a large amount of expansive clays, damage may occur to the structure, especially in times of heavy rainfall or drought.

Florida's Geologic History

Florida has unique origins that occurred long before the Atlantic Ocean existed.  What would become the basement rocks of Florida were once part other continents.  Most of Florida's geological history occurred under the ocean, which explains why our entire state has hundreds of feet of limestone beneath it!  The sands and clays at land surface were deposited as the Appalachian Mountain belt eroded over millions of years.
