To avoid delays when submitting an application for activities located within Broward County, we strongly encourage you to contact the Southeast District permitting team to determine the appropriate agency responsible for reviewing your project. Certain activities, such as activities not located on sovereign submerged lands, are delegated to Broward County.

Florida’s environmental laws require sites be developed, projects built and facilities operated in a manner that is protective of the environment. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issues permits and authorizations for a wide variety of facilities and activities, such as air emission sources, coastal construction, residential and commercial docks, marinas, waste management facilities, and drinking water and wastewater plants. Along with rules and statutes, these authorizations establish criteria and conditions that help safeguard Florida’s natural resources and enhance its ecosystems.

The Southeast District’s Permitting and Waste Cleanup Programs work to ensure the protection of the environment and human health while providing the public with fair, consistent and timely customer service when fulfilling the following responsibilities.

Permitting

  • Performing pre-application meetings. Parties interested in requesting a pre-application meeting should submit their requests through the district's online portal. At this time, all pre-application meetings in the West Palm Beach office are being scheduled on Wednesdays only, and the Marathon Branch Office on Tuesdays only.
  • Issuing domestic and industrial wastewater, underground injection control, drinking water, air and environmental resource permits.
  • Executing sovereign submerged lands authorizations in coordination with DEP’s Division of State Lands.
  • Performing wetland verifications.
  • Providing members of the community with access to permitting resources and FAQs.
  • Implementing state programmatic general permits (SPGP) on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Waste Cleanup and Brownfields

  • Overseeing waste cleanup sites involving petroleum/storage tanks; the redevelopment of former golf courses and pesticide mixing areas; solvents from drycleaners and paint manufacturers; and various other contamination sources.
  • Assisting communities and landowners with brownfield designations and redevelopment.
  • Reviewing groundwater monitoring plans and groundwater monitoring reports.
