Manatee Technical College Fire Academy

The Manatee Technical College Fire Academy is located at:

5530 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.
Bradenton, Florida 34211

This facility currently does not use nor store aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) on-site.  Less than 100 recruits each year participate in Florida Minimum Standards training.  Continuing education courses are provided for fire driver, inspector, fire officer and 1 & 2 fire service instructors training.  The facility is served by a municipal water supply system.  There are no wells on location.

On October 15, 2019, DEP and State Contractor staff completed sampling of soil and ground water at the facility.  Results of this initial sampling event indicated that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) contamination was detected in both ground water and soil above provisional cleanup target levels.

DEP advised the Florida Department of Health (DOH) of these results and directed them to develop and implement a community sampling plan. DOH reconnaissance efforts did not identify any drinking water supply wells in the area so it is has suspended site activities. DEP will continue to work with the academy to develop a cleanup plan to remove or contain the contamination to prevent environmental impact and human exposure. A consultant has commenced additional site assessment activities.
