Geology and the other branches of the earth sciences are essential in achieving environmental protection goals. Daily decisions and long-term strategies that protect our environment depend on our scientists who collect geologic samples in the field, perform sample description and data entry in the office, and conduct sample analyses in the lab. The results are provided through publications, maps and digital data layers that increase our understanding of Florida’s natural systems and processes.
Because geology plays such a critical role in our society, the State Geologist of Florida is legislatively authorized to designate locations with geologic features that have significant educational value to the public, promote further scientific study and understanding of Florida’s geology, play historical roles in human culture, and highlight the importance of conservation efforts. The State Geologist has designated six State Geological Sites.
