On Feb. 2, 2022, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued an National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Notice of Draft Permit to Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) for the construction and operation of an industrial wastewater treatment facility at Hangar X on Merritt Island.
A public meeting will be held on April 25, 2022, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to allow an opportunity for the public to provide input on the draft permit as well as ask questions and obtain information about the draft permit and permitting process.
This draft permit would authorize the facility to discharge up to 3,000 gallons per day of non-process potable water to a stormwater management system that, under specific conditions, discharges to a ditch leading to the Indian River Lagoon.
DEP is committed to protecting Floridians and our state's natural resources and ensuring the state's environmental laws are followed. DEP will not issue any permit that is not protective of Florida's environment and does not meet all requirements of state law.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is the state’s lead agency for environmental management and stewardship – protecting our air, water and land.
