Thin Section Collection

Geologic Thin Section in Transmitted Light

The FGS maintains a collection of more than a thousand petrographic thin sections of rocks, both polished and unpolished, from Florida. The deepest sample in our current collection comes from Collier County, Florida, below 18,000 feet. This collection also includes sediment grain mounts and microslides, which are related to our cuttings and core collections; a number of them are specialized paleontological or heavy mineral mounts. The collection is organized by source well and interval, and it is currently being inventoried.

The FGS thin section collection is currently not accessible in an electronic format; however, ongoing projects are creating digital images of new slides that will be added to the collection. Additional information can be accessed on ScienceBase.
