Recreational Trails Program

The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is a federal grant initiative funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and administered at the state level by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The purpose of the RTP is to provide financial assistance for the development and maintenance of recreational trails, trailheads and trailside facilities for both nonmotorized and motorized recreational trail uses.

The RTP is supported through funds obtained by a portion of the federal gasoline tax attributed to off-highway recreation, and is intended to provide grants to trail project sponsors through an open competition process based on the merit of project proposals. RTP grants are for projects that are primarily recreational in nature, rather than serving a more utilitarian transportation function. Any project funded under this section is intended to enhance Florida's recreation trails systems.
