Monroe County Training Academy

The Monroe County Fire Academy is located at:

US-1
Marathon, Florida 33050

This facility uses aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) on a limited basis twice each year. The foam is applied on both the ground and on impervious surfaces.  Water from the impervious surfaces flows into an on-site retention pond. Approximately 20 persons are trained each session. The facility is served by a municipal water supply system. Less than 100 gallons of AFFF is stored on-site.

On Sept. 26, 2019, a preliminary site reconnaissance and assessment was conducted. Groundwater, surface water and soil samples were collected. Concentrations of perfluorooctanoate acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in groundwater and soil were above provisional cleanup target levels.

DEP advised the Florida Department of Health of these results and directed them to develop and implement a community sampling plan. DOH reconnaissance efforts did not identify any drinking water supply wells in the area so it is has suspended site activities. DEP will continue to work with the county to develop a cleanup plan to remove or contain the contamination to prevent environmental impact and human exposure. A county consultant has commenced additional site assessment activities.

A link summarizing important events at this facility is included below.  More information about this site can be accessed through DEP's information portal.  The Facility/Site ID is ERIC_7416.
