The Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve (AHAP) and partnering agencies are hosting a beach cleanup to remove derelict fishing gear and common household trash such as plastic bottles, cans, single-use plastic items. Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve, located in Panacea is one of 42 aquatic preserves in Florida. It is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection. Marine debris can jeopardize wildlife and public safety. Animals can become entangled in derelict fishing gear such as monofilament line and nets or they can ingest trash like paper and plastic items. Marine debris also detracts from the beauty of Florida's shorelines and affects the public's perception of the environment and aquaculture leases in the AHAP region. The Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve Shoreline Cleanup will start at the public boat ramp at Leonard's Landing in Panacea, off U.S. Highway 98. Please wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. Gloves and trash bags will be provided to all participants.
